ā€” Lydia Martin and Stiles Stilinski about Eichen House in A Novel Approach

Eichen House is a mental health treatment facility in Beacon Hills, California. It was first introduced in Season 3, when it was revealed that the so-called "Shrapnel Bomber" William Barrow was a patient there, and when Lydia Martin used her Banshee abilities to try to find Stiles Stilinski while he was sleepwalking in Riddled. It then gained greater significance during Stiles and Malia Tate's brief time being patients there (as seen in Echo House), and several of their fellow patients, such as Meredith Walker and Oliver, were introduced as well.

In Season 4, it was revealed that Eichen House has a special closed unit specifically for supernatural creatures who pose a risk to the population of Beacon Hills. Eichen House was given even greater focus in Season 5, beginning in A Novel Approach, when Stiles and Lydia went to visit Gabriel Valack to ask him questions about the Dread Doctors and what their ultimate goals were. In the second half of Season 5, Lydia Martin was admitted to Eichen House after she went into a catatonic state following Theo Raeken using his claws to look through her memories and learn the location of the Nemeton in a botched Werewolf memory manipulation ritual.

Lydia's admission to Eichen House ultimately led to a double-infiltration of the facility when both the McCall Pack and the Chimera Pack attempted to break her out; the former with the goal of saving Lydia's life as well as the lives of all of those who would be killed by her dying scream, and the latter to use her connection to Jordan Parrish (possessed by the spirit of the Hellhound Cerberus) to use him to steal the Beast of Gevaudan's powers. It was ultimately the McCall Pack who were victorious in this mission, though the Chimera Pack stole the now-dead Gabriel Valack's Dread Doctor Mask as a consolation prize. It was also revealed that the lock-down accidentally caused by the Chimera Pack's killing of several security guards enabled the imprisoned Peter Hale to escape, though he was soon after abducted by the Ghost Riders of the Wild Hunt.

While Eichen House played a more minor role in Season 6, it was still the site of several major events, most notably the awakening of the Hellhound Halwyn, who had been put in a frozen, trance-like state for one hundred years inside a freezer-room in the supernatural ward. Halwyn's cell was then used on two separate occasions to imprison fellow Hellhound Jordan Parrish, though he was rescued by his packmates both times.

Description[]

Eichen House is a health center that has existed at least since the 1940s during World War II, when it acted as the field hospital for Camp Oak Creek. Because of the way it was built, it gained the moniker "Echo House" because of the fact that all of the sounds inside of the building echo throughout the halls, allowing everyone inside to hear almost every loud sound no matter where they are.

At some point after the war, Eichen House's focus turned to specializing in psychiatric conditions rather than medical issues as it originally did. As a result, most of the facility was dedicated to helping treat humans with serious mental illnesses. However, because of Beacon Hills attracting supernatural creatures of all kinds off and on throughout its existence, it developed a special wing specifically to hold supernaturals who were putting the town's human population at risk. The building is built on the strongest convergence of telluric currents in Beacon Hills, and at least half of the building is made of rowan wood and mountain ash, which functions as its security system; it keeps the creatures who are meant to stay inside from easily escaping, and also prevents other supernatural beings from coming inside if they aren't meant to do so, such as the Oni and the Dread Doctors. They even have at least one room specially made to counter specific supernatural powers, as evidenced by Halwyn's room, which had numerous cooling units meant to keep the room at below-freezing temperatures in order to ward against Hellhounds and their pyrokinetic powers.

Over the years, Eichen House has developed quite a reputation as being a terrifying place, as Stiles Stilinski referred to it as a "nightmare asylum of insanity and death" due to the horrific events that have occurred there.

History[]

In The Fox and the Wolf, it was revealed by Noshiko Yukimura that Eichen House was previously the hospital for Camp Oak Creek, an internment camp for Japanese immigrants and Japanese-Americans during World War II, where Noshiko and Satomi Ito were internees. At some point after the war, Eichen House created a supernatural ward that most of the town's citizens do not know about, a ward where they keep supernatural creatures who pose a threat to the town and the people living in it. The cells in this ward are surrounded by Mountain Ash, which keeps the supernatural prisoners from escaping. Due to the way it was constructed, every sound can be heard as an echo throughout Eichen House, which is why patients have referred to the facility as "Echo House" since it opened.

Throughout Teen Wolf[]

In Riddled, after Stiles Stilinski sleepwalked out of his house and got lost, Lydia Martin and Aiden went to Stiles' bedroom to look for clues as to where he could be. After Lydia started plucking the strings of red yarn attached to his clue board, her Banshee power of Clairaudience and Sound Divination led her to believe that Stiles had ended up in the basement of Eichen House, stating that it was where the so-called "Shrapnel Bomber" William Barrow was hospitalized up until his death. However, though Stiles was dreaming that he was in Eichen House's basement, he was really in the coyote den Beacon Hills Preserve, a fact that they discovered after Lydia, Scott McCall, and Noah Stilinski went to the facility to look for him there.

In Echo House, Stiles checked himself into Eichen House, believing it to be the best place to keep his loved ones safe from him and the influence the Nogitsune possessing him had over his actions. It was there that he met several fellow patients, including his roommate, Oliver, who was possessed by one of the Nogitsune's flies; Malia Tate, the Werecoyote who the McCall Pack saved from her life of living in her full-coyote form in the woods for eight years; and Meredith Walker, a mysterious and troubled girl who was later revealed to be a Banshee. In addition to these new acquaintances, he also reunited with Marin Morrell, who warned him that, if the Nogitsune regained control, she would kill him with pancuronium bromide. Though the letharia vulpina Stiles was injected with suppressed the Nogitsune for a time, it ultimately wore off, causing the Nogitsune to use Oliver, who threatened Malia's life, to manipulate Stiles into letting him back in control over his body. Afterward, Malia checked out of Eichen House and was told how to find Scott McCall.

In The Fox and the Wolf, Noshiko Yukimura explained to Ken Yukimura, Kira Yukimura, and Scott McCall the history of Eichen House during the Japanese internment in World War II, where Eichen served as the field hospital for the those held there. After one of the hospital's doctors, Dr. Liston, and two MPs, Merrick and Hayes, sold a great deal of the medications meant for the internees on the black market, a pneumonia epidemic swept through the camp and caused the deaths of several due to not getting the antibiotics they needed. After Noshiko's then-lover Corporal Rhys was hit with a Molotov cocktail and sustained burns all over his body, he was brought to Eichen, where his screams reverberated through the building due to Liston, Merrick, and Hayes selling the morphine.

A large riot broke out between the internees and the military personnel upon the revelation that the medications had been sold, and dozens of people on both sides were killed in the gunfire. Noshiko was so weakened from all of her gunshot wounds that those in charge believed her to be dead as well and put her body in the back of the truck next to Rhys' body. After Noshiko, furious that the deaths of her fellow internees would be covered up, prayed to her Kitsune ancestors for kitsune-tsuki, with the intention of being possessed by a Nogitsune who fed on chaos, strife, and pain in order to heal herself and take her revenge. However, the Nogitsune possessed Rhys' deceased body instead in a twist of dark humor and went on a rampage, killing even more people, including nurses and doctors at Eichen House. After Noshiko and her Omega Werewolf friend Satomi Ito defeated the Nogitsune, Noshiko put Rhys' body, her shattered katana blade within its scabbard, and a photo of the two of them together in the wall of Eichen House's basement, where it would later be found by Stiles and Malia.

In Orphaned, Stiles Stilinski, Lydia Martin, and Jordan Parrish went to Eichen House to visit Meredith Walker, a Banshee who had previously helped them with key-words to break the Deadpool list code. However, when they got there, Meredith was hesitant to help them, despite Stiles assuring her that she could give them the key-word in whatever language or code she wanted (as the last key-word she had given them, "AIDEN," was given to them in numbers based on the keypad of a telephone).

When they pressed her harder, she revealed that "the Benefactor," who seemed to be running the Deadpool, didn't want her to help them. Lydia changed tactics and asked her what the Benefactor's name was, but Meredith just shook her head, leading Stiles to be confused as to whether she didn't know their identity or if she just didn't want to help them. Lydia, who was getting more and more harsh out of desperation due to the number of people being killed on the Deadpool daily, demanded to know how Meredith knew about him, and Meredith started to clam up, causing Parrish to urge them to ease up on her. Ignoring his instructions, Lydia continued to push until Meredith screamed "I DON'T KNOW" at such a loud volume that Lydia's ears started to bleed. Stiles, Lydia, and Parrish ended up leaving shortly afterward.

That night, while Stiles and Lydia were at Stiles' house, trying to figure out another way to learn the last key-word, they decided to have Lydia use her Banshee instincts and a form of Automatic Writing to divine for it, leading her to type out "DEREK." This unlocked the last portion of the Deadpool list, and when they saw it had Meredith's name on it, the two wasted no time in calling Parrish to let him know that they needed to warn her.

However, when they got a hold of him, Parrish grimly informed them that Meredith had killed herself. The scene cut to a flashback in which Brunski knelt next to Meredith's seemingly dead body on the floor of her room at Eichen House and gently removed the noose she had made with a bedsheet to hang herself.

In Perishable, Lydia had just received a different code, left to her by her deceased grandmother, Lorraine Martin, that was similar to the Deadpool code, and she and Stiles worked together to try to break it. Once they did, they found it was a list of names, including Lorraine herself, and took it to Parrish, only to find that they were all people who were admitted to and subsequently committed suicide at Eichen House.

Knowing they needed to get into the medical records to learn more, Stiles and Lydia went back to Eichen House, this time to talk to Brunski in hopes that they could convince him to let them look at the files. Brunski ultimately agreed to their request, but only if they paid him $1,000; although Lydia only had $500 on her, which had been given to her by her mother Natalie Martin in order to get the carpets cleaned at the Martin Lake House, Brunski ultimately settled for that and handed over the keys.

As they were being led out, both Stiles and Lydia saw that Brunski was listening to a mixtape he made on the exact same tapes that had been sent out to the assassins participating in the Deadpool and came to the conclusion that Brunski was the Benefactor. Their dawning realization didn't go unnoticed by the head orderly, who ambushed them in the basement where the medical records were kept and knocked them both unconscious by electrocuting them with his taser before binding them both back-to-back around a support column.

Lydia and Stiles discussed how the "suicides" they thought were on Lorraine's list were actually murders committed by Brunski, and that Lorraine had left Lydia the message because she had predicted all of the deaths on the list (as well as the deaths on the Deadpool itself) and knew Lydia would figure it out once her powers developed enough to allow her to predict her own death. This was confirmed by Brunski once he returned, though he insisted that they were "murdered," claiming that he wasn't a serial killer like Ted Bundy. Stiles disagreed and referred to him as an "Angel of Death," or a medical professional who killed their terminally ill patients.

Brunski argued that they didn't understand his level of commitment to his work, insisting that he was simply giving release to his very sick patients who needed it, adding that he helped Lorraine for this same reason. He then made it clear that Lydia was going to help him as well, because there was always something about the events leading up to Lorraine's death that never made sense to him.

He played the last moments of Lorraine's life, which he had recorded on audio tape like he did all of the others, and though Stiles urged her not to listen, Lydia couldn't help but pay attention as she heard Lorraine in the tape talking to Brunski. Brunski then identified the part of the tape he didn't understand, which is when Lorraine begged him not to hurt "Ariel," which was her nickname for Lydia.

Afterward, Brunski got into the medicine cabinet and began drawing up a syringe full of some kind of opiate or benzodiazepine, which he intended to use to kill Stiles and Lydia and then blame on them sneaking into the facility to steal drugs to support their "drug habit." He then admitted that, while he had no "unusual talents" like Lydia, he somehow knew that he was going to get another chance to shoot Stiles up with drugs, referencing Stiles' time as a patient of his in Season 3.

However, Brunski decided to try to kill Lydia first, and nearly succeeded, except Parrish arrived and stopped him before he could do so. When Brunski sneered that Parrish was just a "young deputy" and guessed that he hadn't even fired a gun, he moved toward the deputy, forcing him to shoot Brunski in the chest. Stiles and Lydia quickly recapped what had happened as Parrish released them from their restraints, but Brunski, in the midst of bleeding out, laughed at their assumption that he was the Benefactor and that he was controlling Meredith, informing them that it was actually the other way around before he died of his wounds.

Just then, as Lydia was coming to the conclusion that Brunski wasn't actually the Benefactor after all, Meredith appeared from the corner, having been hiding there the whole time, and stated, "No... And, he wasn't on my list... but he was a bad person," revealing that she was, in fact, the Benefactor all along.

In A Promise to the Dead, after Alan Deaton caught the escaped Wendigo Patrick Clark and brought him back to Eichen House, he expected the medical director, Conrad Fenris, to repay him by allowing him to visit one of their patients, Gabriel Valack.

As they walked to Valack's room, Fenris revealed that they had a unit specifically for supernatural creatures, which was where Valack was being held, and made it clear that he did not think this visit was a good idea, informing Deaton that the last person to see Valack "left the room, but not the building," and that all they did was have a conversation, but Deaton, intent on seeing this through, simply stated that he would keep this in mind.

Valack, too, was surprised to see Deaton and guessed that he must be "important" since Eichen House normally didn't allow people to get this close to him. He went on to say that the staff allowed him to read, but only gave him "trashy romance novels," including the one he was currently holding, which he had read seven times. When Deaton introduced himself, Valack revealed he was already familiar with him, including the fact that "cats and dogs" were not actually his specialty, a nod to the fact that he knew Deaton was a Druid Emissary.

Deaton tried to turn the topic to the reason for his visit and asked what he knew about South American mythology, but Valack once again stated that he knew better, retorting, "No-- you want to know about Kate Argent. You want to know about La Loba, the Bone Woman." Deaton confirmed this by getting more specific, as he needed to know what she did to Derek Hale, including whether or not he was dying (referencing the Age Regression ritual she performed on him prior to The Dark Moon that seemed to have caused him to slowly lose his Werewolf powers).

When Valack asked why this was important to Deaton, the veterinarian admitted that it was because of a promise he made to a woman he loved, implying he was talking about Derek's mother, Talia Hale, as he was her Emissary while she was alive. Valack made a comment about how maybe Deaton should be writing the romance novels before making it clear that he wasn't going to learn more unless he got closer to him. Deaton replied that he had been advised against it and revealed that he knew about the fact that Valack's Extrasensory Perception powers had allegedly come from the fact that he performed trephination on himself.

Valack took off the bandage around his head and revealed the third eye that was peering out from the hole he drilled into his head and used it to force Deaton to come closer, causing Deaton to fall into a coma, much to Fenris' disappointment. Fenris then had him brought to another room, where they monitored him for signs of awakening before he decided to move him to another floor. Fortunately for Deaton, Lydia Martin arrived just in time to use her Banshee scream to awaken him before this could occur.

In Smoke and Mirrors, after Peter Hale was defeated during the battle at La Iglesia, he was brought back to Beacon Hills and admitted to Eichen House's supernatural unit, where he angrily argued that they couldn't just dose him with yellow wolfsbane and lock him up.

Suddenly, it was revealed that Peter had been put into Gabriel Valack's room, and the man informed Peter that the walls were lined with Mountain Ash, making it unlikely that Peter would be able to break out on his own. Valack then took off his bandage and used it to cause Peter to see something so terrifying that he immediately began screaming and begging to be let out.
