ā€œ The creature in the previous cell, the Sluagh? The myth is that they can take on the appearance of the lost souls that have become inextricably bound to it. Happen to have seen any lost souls, Mr. Stilinski? ā€

Sluagh are a form of supernatural shapeshifters that were introduced in Season 5 of MTV's Teen Wolf. According to Gabriel Valack, the Sluagh possesses the ability to take the shape of lost souls. This was proven to be true in A Novel Approach when Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin entered the supernatural wing of Eichen House. As they walked down the hall, Stiles looked into one of the cells, where he originally saw Donovan Donati, a Wendigo-Lamprey Chimera who Stiles had secretly killed in self-defense the previous evening. However, this being was soon revealed to be a Sluagh who had simply taken the appearance of Donovan.

In real world mythology, the Sluagh comes both Scottish and Irish mythology, where they are known for being restless spirits of dead that are usually depicted as evil beings who were not welcomed into heaven, hell, or the otherworld. In some myths, they are associated with the Wild Hunt or the fae, otherwise known as the race of fairies.

Teen Wolf Contest

The Sluagh was introduced into Teen Wolf through a contest that was sponsored by both AT&T and MTV for all Teen Wolf fans, giving them a chance to design a creature and submit it in hope for it to be featured on the show. The creatures could either be adapted from mythology and folklore, made-up by the fan, or a mixture of the two, and dozens of people submitted their designs. The winner was a young artist from Brooklyn by the name of Jessica Short, who came up with her own version of the Sluagh.

Appearance

The only Sluagh shown on screen had a very shiny and slick appearance, with gray-ish colored skin, a monstrous face, long pointy ears, and razor sharp fangs.

Powers and Abilities

  • Shapeshifting: The Sluagh's only know ability was to change shape into that of a lost soul. Any other powers are currently unknown at the moment.

Trivia

  • The term "lost soul" was not specified, so whether or not this phrase only relates to the dead or possibly having a different meaning is currently unknown.
  • According to Valack, the Sluagh can take the form of the souls who have been inexplicably linked to it. However, it took the form of Donovan Donati, and it is unknown how Donovan's soul could have been bound to the Sluagh in Eichen House.
